There is a lot of information about this in the German w213 forum, and most German dealers changed them at no cost to the customer. It was a common problem with w213 models manufactured in 2016–2018.
I plan on sending you a link to some background reading on the subject later; there are several pages here, so Google Translate should come in helpful.

But the screen is still not as good as this. Don't expect them to help until you pay a lot of money. Expired beyond the warranty period

The issue described in the link I provided is identical to yours. It's a known flaw on the early w213 and has affected others in the UK as well.

Do you know or hear of anybody who received a free windshield replacement from Mercedes? Since my vehicle is no longer under warranty, I doubt they would repair the screen as a courtesy.

In fact, many Germans have. Where I live, I am unaware of any.

This is not Germany. As a result, they refuse to take any responsibility for a problem caused by the manufacturer. They're just out for your money. I'll shoot an email out to Mercedes' support staff and see if they can assist me.

The only way to find out whether someone is going to "rip you off" is to inquire.

Why? Because everyone does it. In the past when I've had issues with autos, the dealership has conceded there's a problem but done nothing to fix it. The warranty on the automobile had not yet expired. And if you need a fuse replaced, expect to pay about $20. You should expect to pay anything from £150 to £200 for a map update.
