In addition, they will replace the screen at no cost to me if Mercedes Germany acknowledges responsibility for the issue as being the fault of the manufacturer. However, taking responsibility is a huge IF.

I emailed Mercedes-Benz Germany's customer care department, and they promptly contacted me back to tell me to schedule a diagnostic appointment. Mercedes-Benz Germany will investigate the claim the technician has filed and get back to me as soon as possible with their findings.
