The vehicle in question is a 2011 w204 diesel with 50,000 kilometres on it.The air conditioning system was functioning well, then it abruptly started flashing three times upon pressing the button, with no further response.
Where should I commence? Has anybody else encountered the same issue?
Thank you for any guidance or suggestions.

As said before, it is advisable to consistently utilise the air conditioning system during both the summer and winter seasons.
Utilise it or forfeit it.

My 2012 204 model has been functioning well without any need for servicing or repairs. Is this considered uncommon?

Similarly to my prior automobiles, my latest car was utilised all year round for nearly 5 years without any need for regassing or other maintenance.

OP, your air conditioning system is experiencing low refrigerant levels and need a recharge. The reason for the low petrol level is a separate issue, requiring the expertise of a professional to determine. If there is a hole, it is quite probable that a new condenser will also be required. Alternatively, the issue might be due to low gas levels resulting from infrequent use, causing gradual leakage over time.

My mobile air conditioning technician does a comprehensive service on my unit every two years, without my turning it off, at a fee of £50.00.
