I own an inexpensive, outdated OBD2 reader that just interprets engine data and does not access gearbox codes or any exterior information. I want to acquire a 2018 Audi R8 Spyder in February 2025 and need a reliable OBD2 reader, since I hope to retain the R8 for an extended period and wish to monitor any problem codes. Could you offer a specific brand and model of OBD2 reader compatible with the R8?
Thank you.

In typical circumstances, the majority use OBD11. A basic dongle accompanied by a corresponding mobile application. Read, comprehend, and do basic coding tasks. For a more comprehensive experience that includes a laptop and other more features, the Ross-Tech VCDS is recommended.
This will be the same response you will get from all individuals here. I own both, but have not yet used the VCDS application.

Thank you for the information. I will examine both devices, ensuring that the equipment I choose can read TCS codes in addition to basic engine data.

OBD11 offers a more user-friendly interface, while VCDS is orientated towards advanced functionalities with little graphical enhancements.
If you must choose one and do not intend to engage in any coding activities that others have not yet undertaken, an OBD11 will suffice. If you want long-term functionalities and the capacity for in-depth analysis, the VCDS will fulfil all your requirements.

I use OBD11 for convenience, since it allows phone connectivity without cords, and VCDS for more comprehensive diagnostics.

Thank you, I do not want to modify any codes; I only wish to see error codes and reset them as necessary. It seems like OBD11 is a more suitable choice for me; is it compatible with an Apple iPhone? I will investigate it.
