Built on the Focus platform are the Transit and Tourneo Connect vehicles, as well as the C-max. In contrast, the S-Max and Galaxy were built on the longer Mondeo platform.
Both the regular and longer Grand Tourneo Connect body lengths are available for the 2016 Ford Tourneo Connect.
Classic Tourneo Link
The length is 4,418 millimetres, or about 17,3.9 inches.
Diameter: 1,835 mm (not including mirrors)
Approximately 1,854 millimetres (73 inches) in height
Standard wheelbase length: 2,662 mm; specs may slightly vary
Extended Grand Tourneo Connect (LWB)
Dimensions: 4,818 mm (or about 481.8 cm or 189.7 in) in length
Diameter: 1,835 mm (not including mirrors)
Measuring 1,835 mm (or about 183.5 cm) in height
Minimum required wheelbase length: 3,062 mm (or 120.6 in)
Minimum required ground clearance: 144 mm (14.4 cm)^
The following dimensions are listed for the 2016 Ford S-MAX (second generation) on Automobile Dimension and Auto-Data.net:
Physical Measurements
Measuring 4,796 mm (188.8 inches) in length [1]
The width is 1,916 mm (75.4 inches) when the mirrors are not unfolded and 2,137 mm (84.1 inches) when they are.
The height can range from 1,655 mm to 1,658 mm (65.2 to 65.3 inches) with the help of the suspension and trim.
Longitudinal measurement: 2,849 mm - 2,850 mm (112.2 inches)
Space for Footwear and Interior
Boot Space: 630–700 litres (5-seat configuration) (third-row folding determines exact capacity).
The boot capacity is 285 litres with a seven-seat configuration and the third row upright.
Inside: Multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) design with seating for seven people
The Grand Tourneo does seem to be slightly bigger than the S-max based on these measurements.
I guess it's a matter of taste in the end. While the S-Max was always intended to carry passengers, the Tourneo was conceived as a van based on the Transit connect.
