I ultimately resolved the issue; it is evident that three hands are necessary, so I wedged a towel under the handle to secure it while I completed the remaining tasks. The design seems suboptimal, and I aim to avoid frequent engagement with it.

Agreed, I have only seen this once after not driving the vehicle for five days. When I started it and drove, the engine did not activate for nearly a mile (HEV), which causes me to conclude that it is not necessarily a depleted battery, but rather that it has recognised a depletion and shut down as a precaution.
