People in ancient China presumably said yes, and they had negative health consequences as a result. People don't appear to have encountered the health effects (headaches, dizziness, weakened immune system) that MB claimed to be associated with. In my five months as a vehicle owner, I have had none of the issues.

Foam was supposedly utilized in European models due to tight German manufacturing rules (apparently certain VWs and BMWs of the same vintage had the same stench), but I don't know whether the problem or materials used were the same in China. It's possible that totally different components were utilized in the vehicles produced in China.

I can't seem to get rid of this non-odorous odor.

Have you gone a while without blowing your nose?
You wouldn't believe how much crap can become stuck in a person's nose and impair their sense of smell.

I'd want to keep my word and provide an update to this topic. Even a few months after treating the carpets and foam, the 'crayon-like' odor isn't completely gone. However, it is far better than it was.

The most noticeable change is that the somewhat musty older odor that was there in the smell (probably simply due to ageing foam) has been eliminated.

So although some of that faint crayon odor has returned, it's been replaced with an altogether fresher, more modern aroma. The overwhelming majority of passengers have commented on the "new car" aroma.

My vehicle is maintained in a secure residential parking garage, so I've been able to leave the windows slightly ajar and let in some fresh air. If the windows are kept shut, the scent of crayons reappears somewhat.

However, I no longer have to deal with this issue since the musty odor that was bothering me has been eliminated. Again, it seems that many other W204 owners have complained about this throughout the years, so I'm coming back to ask for clarification.

Except than that, I love the automobile. Even with its 120k miles on the clock, thanks to a few minor updates (Android screen, backup camera, phone charging, etc.), it seems like new.

Sounds like you've already taken some serious measures to rid your vehicle of the stench of Crayola crayons, but it couldn't hurt to give them a go as a last ditch effort.

To me, the difference between "masking" and "eradicating" is like the difference between treating the symptoms and the cause.
While in Greece, the previous owner of a secondhand Mk1 MX-5 smoked a large cigar while commuting, leaving a distinct odor in the car. Thus, the smoke had permeated ALL the fabric elements, including the roof. For many days and nights, I had no way of knowing what to do, so I put two incense burners on a steel tray and set them in the car's footwells for the driver and front passenger. Stupid and perhaps harmful, but the vehicle no longer reeked of cigars or lingering incense. So, did the flames eliminate or cover up anything?
