Hello, everyone!

Ever since I purchased my first-generation R8 last autumn, I've been considering getting a new wheel for it. The original R8s featured dull black leather wheels with silver accents. The perforated leather wheels that came standard on all of my earlier sports cars left me wanting for a better wheel in terms of fit, function, and grip. Among the many possibilities I discovered while perusing this forum's archives are MAcarbon, Eurozone, Gen2 conversion, and many more. While I was impressed by the quality of the products offered by each firm, I ultimately decided against spending over $1200 on wheels for the R8 since I had other ideas for it.

After some research, I learned that the TTRS wheel (and several TT wheels) are directly compatible with the Gen 1 R8 wheel. The more I looked into it, the more I saw that TTRS and TT wheels aren't much less expensive; in fact, you can purchase a basic, non-carbon wheel for approximately $750. Even if it was less expensive, I still wasn't convinced to purchase the wheel on the spur of the moment.

Well, I went ahead and did it! This product from the Chinese firm OLIKE is what I ended up purchasing from Amazon: The online retailer Amazon

TTRS brake, This somewhat chunkier-than-OEM bundle has graphite and perforated leather with carbon button surrounds—an costly add-on elsewhere—and red stitching. sent directly to your home for $460. I began looking into the business after seeing that OLIKE had a few good evaluations on the web (in other Audi forums), and since 1. This came with Amazon's basic purchase protection and 2. Since I've had success in the past with Chinese vendors for similar components, and since practically all wheels (except than those costing $1500 or more) are probably manufactured in China, I went ahead and bought them. Plus, I'm relieved that I did: The wheel arrived four weeks later in pristine shape:

There wasn't a single blemish, which left me really satisfied by the quality. Two things stood out to me: first, the paddle shifters wouldn't work with my manual gearbox, and second, the 'RS' emblem wouldn't belong on the R8.

Just about an hour ago, I installed it. It was really easy compared to other auto modifications I've done. It took me about 15-20 minutes in total. Some remarks:

To remove the paddle shifters, just unscrew one screw and lift up the carbon fibre trim that surrounds the buttons. My caged vehicle no longer looks out of place with the shifters that come straight out.
As you can see in the last few photographs down below, the OEM wheel comes with a blank plate that can be simply replaced with the RS logo plate.
I marked the precise centre of the steering shaft with a thin-tip permanent marker to indicate where the OEM and new wheel should sit. Given that the splines are not indexed and can cause the wheel to be installed off-center if you aren't careful, this made it very easy to ensure that I installed the wheel perfectly straight. In the photo below, you can see the mark that I created.

Holy cow, I'm smitten. I may need to take action on this.

How would you go about filling up the empty space on the plate?

In the last photos, you can see the new wheel mounted on the vehicle. I swapped out the carbon "RS" plate that came with it for the blank plate that came with my OEM wheel. No longer is the "RS" plate used. Because the colour of the blank plate is a precise match for the buttons and dials, I don't think it needs anything further. Obtaining a genuine "R8" plate is certainly an option if you so choose. To be honest, I could care less. Blank seems to be OK.

I appreciate the article. Is the stock wheel smaller than this one?

No, the diameter is exactly the same. Compared to the OEM "chunky" wheel, it's noticeably thinner, albeit still thicker.

Fantastic, I am really grateful for this discovery. I can get an Alcantara steering wheel for less money than I've been searching for if I purchase this wheel and have my shop re-wrap the leather in Alcantara. 🙂
