Driving in the Winter

As the recent proprietor of a 2.2 BMW SE AUTO 2001 with RWD, I can attest to their poor performance in the snow. Does anyone have experience with how much this can be enhanced by installing winter tyres on the rear wheels and adding weight to the trunk?

As the new owner of a 2.2 BMW SE AUTO 2001, I know that they are terrible in the snow because they are RWD. Does anyone know how much this can be helped by putting good winter tyres on the back and putting more weight in the trunk?

It's pointless only installing winter tyres on the back since the front brakes would lock up if they're on summer tyres.

Disagree; I locked up well all through the cold season last year.

I simply wanted to keep my rear end from slipping out from under me, since that's notoriously difficult to recover from, and keep my footing on the various slopes in the area.

If the circumstances call for more traction, it seems logical to have it on all four wheels.

Yes, but I determined that rears alone would suffice, and they did.

Winter tyres grip on this stuff, so I fail to see how having them on the back of the car would prevent the front wheels from locking up when braking on compact snow/ice in the summer. If I were to use winter tyres, I would want them to be able to handle all of winter's conditions, not just the ones that make it possible to get the car from point A to point B.

Fitting all four corners makes sense.
I never use them since we don't get enough snow and I don't drive too much anymore.
I used to drive in the snow before they had winter tyres, haha.
