Greetings, everyone. I have been observing but cannot discover any pertinent information, therefore I hope this may assist. I own a 2005 BMW E46 equipped with a four-cylinder N46 engine. There seems to be an oil leak in the rear of my engine on the left side, near the exhaust pipe, resulting in oil combustion and a foul odour inside the vehicle whenever I stop after prolonged driving. The situation is so severe that smoke is seen emanating from under the hood when stationary. It seems to originate from the lowest section of my engine. What may the cause be? Perhaps a fractured block or a distorted head? I lack substantial familiarity with engines, so maybe one of you is familiar with this problem and can provide a general explanation of its nature? I have previously changed the valve cover, but it had no effect. I inadvertently used 5w30 instead of 5w40, after which the problems began.

I apologise if I misunderstood; English is my second language. However, I changed the gasket when changing my valve cover, and it is entirely dry around the valve cover.

Did the oil leak begin with the alteration of the rocker cover?

No, that was a problem before to my modification as well. The rationale for altering the cover was my belief that it was the most probable source of leakage.
