I own a 2020 C-Class coupe. The oil level has decreased to just over the minimal threshold. I returned it to the main dealer for an inspection to see whether there was a leak or if it was consuming oil. A visual check was conducted, revealing no leaks and confirming that the level was OK, but slightly over the minimal threshold, without any more explanation provided. The vehicle has barely accumulated 39,000 miles. I feel apprehensive on this matter. Do you have any suggestions?

The onboard oil level display on Mercedes vehicles is subpar, similar to that of other contemporary automobiles. Upon purchasing our E class, the oil level indicated the minimal threshold. Following a comprehensive service, it was also at a minimal level. Due of my obsessive-compulsive tendencies, I added 100ml, after which it indicated maximum capacity.

I consulted our local Mercedes expert, who said that it is not an optimal system and should function well as long as it does not indicate low oil levels. Was the vehicle positioned on a flat surface when it indicated the level? In our case, it often indicates testing the oil level without displaying any information. I detest the absence of a dipstick. Exercise caution while adding oil, since it is very sensitive and may be easily overfilled, which will trigger a warning message. As it is impossible to extract oil from the dipstick tube when overfilled, it is a nuisance to remove a little quantity to achieve the appropriate level.

Why eliminate a physical dipstick? It is an imprudent notion; yet, I presume that Mercedes-Benz owners prefer to avoid manual labor. 😆

The electronic oil level measurement system is designed to alert diesel vehicle operators of excessive oil levels, which may be detrimental to the engine. This explains why Mercedes-Benz diesel-engine vehicles were the first recipients of this technology. It subsequently became a prevalent convenience feature in several fuel variants.

For most engine types equipped with this mechanism, it is indeed possible to purchase an oil dipstick and continue checking the oil level using conventional methods.

For a diesel engine, two key factors concerning engine oil are an excessively high oil level and insufficient oil pressure. All other factors are subordinate, including the oil level and the precise oil pressure measurement.

Engines use oil. Consequently, a mechanism exists for monitoring the level

The complete absence of oil is somewhat catastrophic, I would have imagined. 😆

The low oil pressure indicator will illuminate well in advance of this occurrence.

The oil level is crucial to monitor; by the time the low pressure indicator activates, damage may occur within seconds. Nevertheless, my 100,000-mile OM 642 has not used any oil throughout the year I have had it; yet, it is equipped with a dipstick for monitoring levels.
