Today, I had my first oil change for my X6 M60i, which was graciously provided by BMW as part of the warranty coverage. Upon returning my key fob and documentation, the sales associate (SA) made a remark about the costly nature of oil changes for M60i vehicles. In response, I inquired about the reason behind this, to which he said that these vehicles need a unique kind of oil. Due to the collective sense of urgency, there was little time for individuals to engage in inquiry or provide more details. Does anybody in this forum possess any valuable thoughts or perspectives on the matter at hand?
Please be advised that there is no automatic iDrive update available for version 8.5.

Yesterday, I had a preemptive oil change for my M60i vehicle. The BMW Group used the usage of the LL-01 FE 0W-30 oil, which may be considered a commonly used standard oil. The indication about the S68 engine's need for a different component was not provided to me. The X5M equipped with the S68 engine does need the use of a distinct oil during the break-in period, which is why it is recommended to undergo a first "M" oil change. Perhaps it was the thought process they had in mind?

The cost of five quarts is $37. Based on my understanding, the S68 is estimated to have a capacity of 8 quarts, however I cannot definitively confirm this information. It seems that the cost of this particular oil change is comparable to that of other synthetic oil changes.

Which kind of oil is often used for the break-in process? Could you please provide more specific details or clarify your question?

In light of the potential for initiating a discourse on engine oil, I use the utilisation of Castrol Edge Euro 5W-30, a product that has obtained BMW LL-01 approval and satisfies all other necessary oil specifications. The $26/5 quart container may be readily found at Walmart. I do oil and filter changes at intervals of 5,000 miles. During the period from November to May, I keep my X7 M50i, so avoiding any instances of low temperature winter driving.

By using the integrated owners handbook inside the iDrive system, users are able to access the recommended oil viscosity as prescribed by BMW for their respective vehicles. The integrated iDrive owners handbook is tailored to the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of each individual vehicle. The objective is to ascertain if the viscosity of the BMW under consideration differs from that of another model within the product range.

The process of locating information may be simplified by using the keyword search function. Please input the term "OIL" into the provided field. The latest generation of BMW vehicles likely include voice command functionality, enabling users to access the oil-related section of the onboard owners handbook immediately. The photographs shown below were taken from my 2013 f06 GC vehicle, equipped with the previous iteration of the iDrive system known as the Car Information Computer (CIC) version. The following images shown below are screen samples of iDrive 7's integrated owners manual, which offers the functionality of doing keyword searches to locate particular information.

I am uncertain about the specific oil recommended for the break-in period of S68 X5Ms. However, I have come across a discussion in another post on the variation in oil changes for M60i models.

This conjecture posits that the M series engines, due to their meticulous tuning, may not require a distinct break-in oil. However, the rationale for the recommendation for an earlier oil change might be attributed to the possibility of early oil fill contamination. It is possible that individuals who purchase a M series vehicle may have a tendency to be less stringent in adhering to break-in constraints. Consequently, it is advisable to promptly replace the oil and filter in order to ensure optimal performance.

Although modern engines have narrower tolerances compared to older ones, it still takes a certain amount of time for components to properly settle and optimise their performance. Consequently, there is a possibility of increased blowby and contaminants entering the oil, including possible particles that might cause wear. Changing the filter can assist in mitigating these issues.

An intriguing prospect would include dissecting the first filter, unfolding its components, and conducting a thorough examination to identify any metallic deposits it may have captured.
