Can someone suggest a gizmo that would be satisfactory?

Bimmerlink is capable.
This is a good tool in my humble opinion. You may wish to do further research since there are plenty alternative options available.

For Android users, consider using Bimmer-Tool. While it doesn't allow coding, it can read/delete codes, see logs, and access live data, serving as a portable version of INPA. Also compatible with the standard K/D can cable when connected via a USB to USB-C adaptor.
