What is the process of DPF regeneration?
The fan is operating, and I am grasping the gears. The exhaust is running really hot, which is apparent from the smell and the significantly heated air emanating from underneath the car.

The DPF light has never been illuminated in the three years that I have had the vehicle. I would appreciate your suggestions on what course of action to take. Thank you. The car has been running very well throughout the three years I have owned it, and I have never had to refill water or oil levels. Additionally, it has been serviced annually, without delay.

The DPF light only illuminates during the regen process if there is a malfunction, to the best of my knowledge.
Drive the vehicle on the motorway for about 10 minutes at a consistent pace. Switch the car to manual mode and downshift the gears to maintain the engine speed over 3,000 revolutions per minute (RPM). This will facilitate the diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration process.
