Do I see a little increase from last year in the price of motor oil, or is it just me?

Price increases are everywhere compared to last year.
You should compare prices, but the Ford online stores often provide the best deals on oil.

Moreover, retailers offer oil for those of us on a restricted budget...

Deals and discounts may come and go at any time. My wife's Mazda2 needed four gallons of Castrol magnetec, and I needed it recently. The greatest deal I could discover was at Tesco, where I bought four 1-liter bottles with a membership card discount. A few years back, I found the best price on four one-liter bottles at Asda. Don't assume that the 4 liter, 1 gallon, or 5 liter option is always the best value. As with antifreeze, the price of oil seems to have risen in recent years at a faster rate than inflation.

Don't forget that some name-brand oils are dubious.

About 20 years ago, I regularly put 1,400 miles on a 1984 Fiesta. A gallon of oil was used each month (there was no leak, but the appliance was burning the oil), and the exhaust was somewhat smoky. A gallon at Asda cost me four dollars and ninety-nine pence. In my opinion, even the cheapest gallon (4.54 liters) costs far more than $4.99 after inflation is included in. According to the Bank of England's inflation calculator, it's less than 9 pounds.
