Not a Mercedes; rather, a Range Rover Fifty P400E. I often allow the vehicle to determine whether to utilise petrol or electricity; nevertheless, for the sake of "science" (due to a lack of better activities), I resolved to ascertain the electric range. The Range Rover indicates a range of 30 miles on a full charge, which is adequate for my driving needs. A distance of 50 miles would be ideal for me, but it is acceptable. I charged it last night using the standard charger. This morning, the vehicle was fully charged at 13 miles, indicating a range of 30 miles, and the cost, according to my smart meter, was approximately 60 pence. Activated the electric button and we departed. The journey app indicates that I travelled a total of 8.9 miles, with 8.1 miles being on electric mode. The vehicle currently indicates a remaining range of 10 miles, rather than the expected 21.9 based on basic calculations; but, in terms of cost relative to petrol, it is quite favourable.

Most manufacturers appear to specify their range under ideal conditions, such as the absence of air conditioning. Additionally, the older the vehicle, the less the range it appears to achieve.

I enquired about the age because my godfather possesses a 2018 BMW 330e, which was expected to achieve 14 miles on a full electric charge—adequate for his work commute. Initially, this was acceptable as he would utilise the electric mode and charge the battery to full capacity overnight. However, after seven years and around 60,000 miles, the vehicle operates only on the petrol engine, and the battery is incapable of retaining any charge.

The overall mileage recorded was 18.9 miles, with the electric vehicle component accounting for 15 miles. Given a completely charged range of 30 miles, there should be 15 miles remaining; however, it indicates just 10 miles left. Significantly improved. However, it is quite economical, approximately 53 pence for 15 miles in an electric vehicle, despite being a large, hefty automobile. That said, I would never purchase a totally electric vehicle; yet, a Range Rover is an excellent environment to occupy. Mine includes all possible extras except for a tow bar, which would be unnecessary.

The concern with utilising a PHEV for short trips, operating solely on electric power, is that the battery undergoes significant charge-discharge cycles daily, typically ranging from 100% to approximately 10%. That will deplete it rapidly, with 1000 complete charges in under five years. The assertion regarding a 7-year-old vehicle having depleted its battery is quite credible.

Conversely, a fully electric vehicle travelling 15 miles daily will require charging only once a week, allowing the battery to remain within the less stressful 80% to 20% range, so significantly extending its lifespan.
