However, the update from 02/2026 was applied manually via USB.
Do over-the-air updates add anything new? Curious as to why there is a fee?

Although there is no more update material, the OTA method is clearly far more convenient than dealing with downloads, USB sticks, and the car upload procedure.

To be very honest, I thought it was fairly simple. Definitely not worth spending so much on the pleasure. Undoubtedly, the cost-effectiveness of the experience is questionable.

Recently, I switched from sluggish broadband to considerably faster full-fibre, and the download time for the most recent update was far faster than all of the others I've done since 2016.
Rather of spending three hours on it, the data was transferred to the USB device in about forty minutes. It just took another half an hour to do the workout while driving.

A Gen5W OTA update is supposedly happening at the moment, and it will be interesting to watch when the USB version is released. The process is straightforward, but the OTA is now going out first and the wait looks to be months. So, it depends on how fast you prefer to update. It appears that the USB version will be released months after the OTA version, which is presently coming out first.
That is, it is relative to your preferred update speed.

4G probably won't make much of a difference by the time the OTA has downloaded.

While it may be simple for those with basic computer skills, it is still more work than simply letting the automobile do its thing. Even if I did, I doubt anybody would pay because I've only updated our Kias manually once in almost four years.

I upgraded yesterday from my prior "piece of wet string" BT broadband to Full Fibre broadband after some "faffing" on BT's part. Now I'm expecting that download speeds will be far faster than the 6 hours I've seen before, and it will definitely be better than paying extra for over-the-air downloads.
