The wife recently purchased an automatic 2010 Mini Cooper S with 80,000 miles. This death rattle keeps popping up in my research. Upgrading the tensioner is something I have not yet verified. In the maintenance logs, I don't find any mention of it.

Well, it appears that the tensioner has also remained unchanged.

There's no use in replacing the tensioner with 80k on the clock chain unless you're already done with it. For best results, do it all at once and then refresh the engine. Look up engine refresh on this site to see how they all turn out. If you need advice, I can give it to you for free. If you just want it sorted for future reference, you can send it to me, and I'll do it for free.

Mini coopers encounter problems with the death rattle at certain mileages; this starts around 80,000, 100,000, and 110,000 kilometres, and then it's slammed down, so you have to shift gears to prevent the tack tack tik tok noise.

Avoid being regretful down the road by replacing the dead trap timing chain kit.
