Esteemed Colleagues,

spring is come and my windscreen is damaged! A little chip located near the top of the screen is the reason. I do not remember being struck by a stone, but it must have occurred.

I am going to be claiming via my insurer (privilege) who utilise Autoglass with a £75 excess. I don't believe I'll accept the any fitter option given the donation is a magnificent £125.

Is Autoglass using OEM glass?
Will the (I guess rain/light) sensor for auto wipers & lights behind the rearview mirror need recal? Does Autoglass provide this service, and if not, how is it organised?
I'll be asking this lot of my insurer/Autoglass in due time but it would be great to be pre-warned.

Thank you in advance.

Unless explicitly asked, it will need special approval from your insurance.

Occasionally, it functions adequately without recalibration; at other times, it does not. My experience is that Autoglass will not carry out sensor recalibration as a matter of course (except if it is for the stereo cameras used by Lane Keeping Assist which they have to do as it's a safety critical system), and if you subsequently find it needs it you will have to go to an MB dealer or an indie with STAR.

I had previously harboured that notion. Preparing to contact the insurance provider.

I had my service performed by Autoglass last week.

(1)

OEM glass may be installed, contingent upon insurance approval. My insurance, Admiral, would not consent to it, so I had the non-OEM component installed, which seems similar. Enquire with Autoglass, and they will get out to your insurance to see whether MB glass may be installed. Autoglass emphasises that there is no distinction between OEM and non-OEM products, other from the branding. Not sure whether I truly believe them but it is their party line and they stick to it!

(2)

My vehicle is equipped with automatic headlights and rain-sensing windscreen wipers. No recalibration was required after the installation of the screen; however, I had a slight difficulty with the rain sensors, as mentioned in this thread:

Recommendations for Auto-Wiper and Interior Lighting!

General Recommendations:

I recommend testing the lights and wipers prior to the replacement of the screen. I recorded a video of their work to have documentation in the event of post-installation complications.

After replacing the screen, verify the functionality of the lights and wipers. Complete the task with the technician and ensure he does not go until everything is satisfactory.

To evaluate the automatic lights, cover the sensor block located behind the rearview mirror with your hand or a towel. Just place a towel on the windscreen covering the optical sensors on the opposite side of the glass. Your lights ought to activate. Eliminate fabric. After a few seconds the lights should shut off.

Then (with the doors shut - else it won't work), spritz the sensor with a plant spray or equivalent and confirm the wipers come on. Test and few times to make sure. Ensure that the bonnet and doors are securely closed; otherwise, you may seem foolish when attempting to test the wipers, as they will be inoperative.

With Admiral, you have the option to pay the difference for OEM glass. OEM glass should be authorised for vehicles up to three years old, as stipulated in their terms and conditions. Autoglass immediately informed me that I must visit their office for windscreen replacement owing to sensor calibration requirements.

You'll receive what you agreed to when you took out the insurance.

The issue of 'which glass' must be resolved prior to policy implementation.

I had one replaced by auto glass on a cls with intelligent lighting late last year, auto glass advised it HAD to be done at one of their centers due of the calibration of the cameras. when my arrival, I courteously requested the fitter to inspect the vehicle for any markings or scratches, asserting that there were none, and suggested we do a further examination when my return to collect it. They ought to inform you if calibration is necessary.

I neglected to mention that I attempted to finish the booking online, but was unable to finalise it. The system prompted me to phone, since the cameras need calibration in the workshop, which cannot be performed during a home or business installation.

A good buddy of mine is an Autoglass technician with 30 years of expertise and provides training to others. Regrettably, like in many professions, there are both proficient and inadequate fitters. The installation is accompanied by a warranty, ensuring that any post-installation concerns are addressed by senior fitters, such as my buddy, who are tasked with resolution. He expressed his disdain for owners who insist on observing him as he works, as it signifies a lack of trust and regard for his expertise, which is important if one want the fitter's support.

I enquired about the most challenging task, and he said that replacing full-length panoramic roofs, like those on the Range Rover, is particularly difficult, since insurance reimburse the same installation cost as for side windows to Autoglass.
